Improved PFEL SST and Pressure Maps with Easy Web Access

Current Status of Accomplishment or Milestone: Completed

Background: PFEL produces a variety of environmental data products useful to fisheries research scientists; many are derived from data from the Navy's Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanograpy Center (FNMOC). We have traditionally provided users monthly SST anomaly maps for three selected areas and maps of FNMOC analyzed pressure reduced to mean sea level. The maps were produced on a mainframe and mailed to customers.

Purpose of Activity/Goal of Project: Improve the SST maps by using a more recent climatology and adding color to make the interpretation of the maps easier. Use the new one degree grid in producing the pressure maps and also add color to improve interpretation of the maps. Transfer the processing and access to the products to PFEL's IT-95 server. Provide Internet access to the products.

Description of Accomplishment and Significant Results: All purposes of the activity have been accomplished. The maps can be accessed through the URL:

Significance of Accomplishment (e.g., to the Center, to Management, and to NMFS Strategic Plan Goals): This is part of the ongoing effort at PFEL to improve the quality, scope and timeliness of its data products, and to provide increased efficiency in the calculation and delivery, including Internet access to the products.

Problems: None.
