Current Status of Accomplishment or Milestone: Completed
Background: Since the earliest days of our existence the Navy's Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center has hosted the computational processes supporting Pacific Fisheries Environmental Group's routine and special product preparation. Over the last several years, major changes have occurred in the Navy's computational environment including significant hardware, software, data systems transitions, leading to the shutdown of the CDC computers traditionally used by PFEG for archiving the data and for producing products. In addition, FNMOC has converted the formats that they use for maintaining and transmitting data.
Purpose of Activity/Goal of Project: To convert PFEG's data archiving and product development to its IT-95 computer while continuing to support strong cooperative bonds between NOAA and the Navy.
Description of Accomplishment and Significant Results: All software has been converted from the Control Data Corporation CYBER mainframe computers and successfully implemented on PFEG's IT-95 Silicon Graphics, Inc., Challenge L (IT-95) server under the open UNIX operating system. The entire historical archive of source data and product sets used in PFEG's product preparation were converted to FNMOC's new data formats. Programs and transmission procedures were established allowing for data and product sets formerly accessed from archival magnetic tape volumes prepared by the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center to now be routinely received from the Navy onto PFEG's IT-95 system over the Internet under automated FTP processes, and for the products to be produced on PFEG's IT-95 system. Delivery to users of PFEG's products is now available over the Internet through similar FTP processes, and through PFEG's homepage, and PFEG has been able to expand the range of products available.
Significance of Accomplishment (e.g., to the Center, to Management, and to NMFS Strategic Plan Goals): Allows the continuation of PFEG's data products that are routinely provided to many users within NMFS, NOAA and beyond, while significantly increasing turnaround time and improving ease of access for users of the products. Significant cooperative efforts were required by the Navy and NOAA to yield this successful result, and this has occurred due to the long-standing cooperative efforts between the Navy and PFEG.
