Complete Scientific Manuscript on Dynamical Similarity of
Climate Variability on Interannual
and Multi-Decadal Scales
Current Status of Accomplishment or Milestone: Delayed to Fourth Quarter 2003.
Background: An international symposium, Impacts of El Niño and Basin-Scale Climate Change on Ecosystems and Living Marine Resources: A comparison between the California and the Humboldt Current systems, was held in Chile in August 2002. The purpose of this symposium was to increase the exchange of scientific information and cooperation between the California and the Humboldt research communities. Frank Schwing gave an invited oral presentation. As part of the symposium, plans were made to publish many of the presentations in a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal.
Purpose of Activity/Goal of Project: The purpose of this activity was to prepare a manuscript on climate variability in the California and the Humboldt ecosystems, for publication in a special volume of papers based on the presentations at this symposium.
Description of Accomplishment and Significant Results: Plans to publish a special volume of a peer-reviewed journal have been slow to materialize. An outline of this paper has been prepared, and potential international co-authors have been contacted. However the paper has not been written due to the delay with the special volume. In the interim, the lead authors from PFEL have prepared and published a series of related peer-reviewed papers related to this topic.
Significance of Accomplishment (e.g., to the Center, to Management, and to NMFS Strategic plan Goals): An important aspect of the research conducted at PFEL and in the SWC is interpreting and presenting results for international scientists and resource managers. This symposium was an ideal forum. Publishing the scientific results of this research also helps fulfill this goal.
Problems: This manuscript was delayed by uncertainty in the special volume of papers from an international symposium. Due to this delay, we are preparing a similar manuscript for Deep-Sea Research, a peer-reviewed journal. It will be completed July 2003.
