Current Status of Accomplishment or Milestone: Completed.
Background: The Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (COADS) represents the most complete, quality controlled data set of surface marine observations. These data are essential for almost any study of long-term environmental influences on the population dynamics of fish stocks and marine mammals. While there are several means of accessing pre-processed summary files of the COADS, for many fisheries applications these are not adequate, due to for example the grid used, or the lack of fisheries relevant indices, such as wind speed cubed.
Purpose of Activity/Goal of Project: Access will be provided to the raw COADS over the internet, allowing the user to subset the data based on a variety of flags provided in the data, visualize the data, and download the extract in a variety of formats suitable for further analysis.
Description of Accomplishment and Significant Results: A Live Access Server has been developed which allows real-time extractions from the raw COADS data, with a variety of flags that can be set to constrain the data that will be included (see http://las.pfeg.noaa.gov/las_coads ).
Significance of Accomplishment (e.g., to the Center, to Management, and to NMFS Strategic plan Goals): Makes for ready availability of oceanographic data important for evaluating natural influences on fish and marine mammal population dynamics and fluctuations, and for improved forecasting and management.
