NMFS Estuarine And Ocean Research Plan
For West Coast Salmon Published
Current Status of Accomplishment or Milestone: Completed. The article, "A Coordinated Research Plan for Estuarine and Ocean Research on Pacific Salmon" was published in the American Fisheries Society journal, Fisheries (Volume 25, no. 6, pages 7-16).
Background: The factors influencing survival of salmonids during the estuarine and marine phase are the subject of current research at three different west coast centers as well as state government, university, other federal agencies, and international entities. NMFS research in estuarine and ocean survival is only now developing fully, and this article provides a coordinated research plan. It addresses the key issues in salmonid biology and fisheries on the west coast while minimizing duplication of effort within NMFS and complementing research undertaken by others. The article is authored by scientists from all three west coast centers and was completed during a rotational assignment program at PFEL.
Purpose of Activity/Goal of Project: The overall goal was to develop a coordinated plan among the three west coast centers to minimize duplication, improve cooperation and communication, and identify the key issues of importance to NMFS. This publication highlights NMFS research for the fisheries and environmental community.
Description of Accomplishment and Significant Results: This publication provides a framework under which NMFS estuarine and ocean research should be developed.
Significance of Accomplishment (e.g., to the Center, to Management, and to NMFS Strategic plan Goals): This plan will serve as a basis for high priority research needs and the resources necessary to address them. The plan applies both to Recover Protected Species (largely applicable to west coast salmonids) and Build Sustainable Fisheries (Alaska salmonids) elements of the NOAA Strategic Plan.
