Spanish Researcher Completes Research Visit At PFEL

Current Status of Accomplishment or Milestone: Completed.

Background: Past collaborative efforts between scientists at PFEL and AZTI (Instituto Tecnológico Pesquero y Alimentario) in San Sebastián, Spain have resulted in use of PFEL environmental data products for analysis of annual anchovy production. This work has been conducted remotely, without benefit of face-to-face contact between investigators. A trip was developed for an AZTI researcher to visit PFEL to work with PFEL scientists.

Purpose of Activity/Goal of Project: Dr. Angel Borja, Head of Projects in the Department of Oceanography at AZTI visited PFEL in February to work with PFEL scientists, to learn more about existing and potential products, and to complete a manuscript on environmental variability and Atlantic mackerel recruitment.

Description of Accomplishment and Significant Results: Interactions during Borja's visit were positive in terms of scientific exchange. Environmental variability and its impacts on fisheries were compared between Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Additional environmental data time series were collated for further research and analysis at AZTI.

Significance of Accomplishment (e.g., to the Center, to Management, and to NMFS Strategic plan Goals): Applications of environmental data to fisheries research and management is still a relatively new area of research, and comparative approaches to application in different systems is highly useful. The visit will stimulate additional use of PFEL's data products in Spanish fisheries research and will strengthen NMFS' international collaboration.
