PFEL's FIT Systems Updated

Current Status of Accomplishment or Milestone: Continuous Process

Background: The FIT systems at the PFEL represent the underpinnings of communications and resource sharing with the fisheries research community, as well as the main computing engines for scientific research and data processing.

Purpose of Activity/Goal of Project: To improve computer usage design, increase computer security, improve scientific computing capabilities, and improve external data access and distribution.

Description of Accomplishment and Significant Results:The primary usage of each system has been cleary defined, and the resources on each system (RAM, hard drives, software etc) have been expanded and rearranged so that each system is better configured for its assigned tasks. The new design has only a single computer affording ready access to the outside world (WWW, FTP), allowing for greater overall security of PFEL computers. All systems were upgraded to at least IRIX 6.2 for the operating system, which is fully supportive of Y2K issues. PMEL's Live Access Server has been mplemented and expanded on to provide improved sharing with the outside world of PFEL's data products and holdings. The goal is for all sytems to be upgraded to IRIX 6.5 by the end of the fiscal year, as well as implementing a firewall for the internal system computers.

Significance of Accomplishment (e.g., to the Center, to Management, and to NMFS Strategic plan Goals): Improvement in digital government services for civilian as well as government acccess to data resources held at the PFEL.

Problems: Recent power outage requires recovery effort for one disk storage module which failed to spin-up.
