PFEL Hosts U.S.-Chile Fisheries Meetings

Current Status of Accomplishment or Milestone: During 2-4 November 1999, the SWFSC's Pacific Fisheries Environmental Laboratory hosted the U.S.-Chile fisheries negotiation meetings. Arrangements were made over the period of several months and the meeting was successfully completed.

Background: Cooperation in issues related to fisheries research and management between the U.S. and Chile has occurred for several years, and this high level meeting facilitates and formalizes that cooperation. Arranged by F/ST, it typically is hosted by a regional fisheries laboratory.

Purpose of Activity/Goal of Project: To enhance future research and management cooperation with Chile on common problems in fisheries.

Description of Accomplishment and Significant Results: Discussions were held on topics including cooperation in research, enforcement, administration and management, multilateral agreements, and the environment. Several issues of particular interest to the Southwest Fisheries Science Center were covered, including marine turtle research and bycatch, swordfish, large marine ecosystems, small pelagics, and effects of environmental variability on fisheries. Several scientists from PFEL and elsewhere in the SWC made presentations on current research, and continuing agreements on future research were made.

Significance of Accomplishment (e.g., to the Center, to Management, and to NMFS Strategic plan Goals): Cooperation between nations is particularly important on fisheries issues that transcend national boundaries and EEZs. Meetings such as this facilitate improved cooperation and understanding.
